Phuket Hotel Booking - Try Agoda.com

I have looked at many online hotel booking sites - the original idea was to have several different booking options for the hotels reviewed on my blogs, giving people the opportunity to check rates at a bunch of different sites. Regular travelers will probably have their preferred booking site, and I don't wish to try and change anyone's mind about which is best, but I have to say that over the last few years the Agoda.com site has got neater, the hotel descriptions better, the booking process easier. And it's now the site that I recommend more than any other.

Suggested Hotels at Kata Beach

Of Phuket's main beaches, Kata is reckoned to be the quietest, though I think in the last few years it's maybe become busier than Karon. Kata Beach, is where mass tourism really started in Phuket when Club Med opened back in 1985. Club Med is still there occupying a huge tract of land in front of the beach - not actually right on the beach - there is a small, fairly quiet and narrow beach road between the resort and the sand. Another slightly bigger road behind Club Med takes much of the traffic heading from one end of Kata to the other. The main through road (Patak Road) is even further from the beach - linking Kata and Karon Beaches heading from Karon Circle at the north end of Karon, passing Karon and Kata temples and finally a few km later, up to the hill to Chalong and on to Phuket Town. Patak Road does have some hotels, or has the main entrances to some larger hotels, and is where many local people actually live, with lots of small restaurants and businesses by the roadside. Here's a little list of some suggested hotels in the Kata Beach area.

Suggestions for Kata Beach Hotels

Sawasdee Village

Sawasdee Village

Sawasdee Village has been in Phuket for a long time, opened in 1991 - a green oasis with lush gardens and water features, a very good spa and an olde Thai style feeling. There's also the luxury Baray Villa on the same site.

Mom Tri's Villa Royale

Mom Tris Villa Royale

Has to be one of the best hotels in Phuket, (almost) always gets amazingly good reviews. Villa Royale was built on the site of the owners house, and overlooks Kata Noi beach - about a 15 minute walk or 2 minute taxi ride to the busier area at the south end of Kata beach. It's another olde Thai style place with individual villas on the hillside, and a top rated restaurant too.

Avista Resort

Avista Resort

Avista opened at the end of 2009, on the hillside overlooking Kata Bay at the north end of Kata beach. A modern style hotel with all the mod cons, and gets a lot of very good reviews. Close to the beach and and Kata Center.

CC's Hideaway Hotel

CCs Hideaway Hotel

CC's Hideaway (formerly CC Blooms) is a different kind of place to stay - up in the hills, great view but not by the beach, it used to be promoted as gay-friendly (something to do with Bette Midler) and may not be for everyone due to the hillside location, quite a long way from the beach, but did I mention the views? I've been up several times to pick up diving customers, looks like a nice little hideaway to me!

Kata Palm Resort

Kata Palm Resort

Kata Palm Resort is more of a family oriented hotel, a standard "holiday resort" with big pool and kids pools, lots of rooms, just a few minutes walk to the beach and close to lots of restaurants at the busy south end of Kata Beach.

The Village - Coconut Island

Coconut Island (Koh Maphrao) is on the east coast of Phuket, accessed from a pier at Laem Hin, where you can find a great restaurant (Laem Hin Seafood) and there are also floating restaurants just off Coconut Island, very popular with locals and not so touristy. The Village, you can guess is a bit off the beaten track, on a small island, so please don't book and them complain it's too far from Patong, or complain the fried rice is a bit more expensive than in town. Yeh, it's a resort on a little island, reached by water taxi. A whole different Phuket to the main tourist areas. Looks great to me!

Centara Grand Beach Resort - Karon Beach Phuket

Centara have a whole bunch of hotels in Phuket. The Centara Grand Beach Resort opened in late 2010, although (I drive past every day) I could see it was still being finished off after the grand opening! Now it's well established, right at the north end of Karon Beach, right by the beach, a little bit away from the main Karon area.. up to you if you want a 1 kilometer walk along the beach or a quick taxi ride. You're also only a 5 minute drive from Patong although in a much quieter location! It'a big resort to be sure, with several of it's own restaurants and bars and a spa too.

Centara Grand West Sands Resort & Villas

The West Sands Resort has now been taken over by the Centara group who have several hotels in Phuket. West Sands is at Mai Khao Beach, just north of the airport, a very quiet area, with the hotel entrance accessed down a winding country road. A million miles from the crowds, but if you want to get out and about from there, hire a car. One of the big pluses, especially if you have kids (or enjoy behaving like kids) is the Splash Jungle Waterpark which is on the hotel grounds. Great fun!

Cliff and River Jungle Resort - Khao Sok National Park

If we take a holiday.. we like to go somewhere that is different to Phuket.. So, no beaches, no crowds, no shopping centers... We have been several times to Khao Sok National Park, which is all mountains, cliffs, rivers, lakes and wildlife. We're maybe not into hiking and kayaking, but we have found our favourite place to relax - the Cliff and River Jungle Resort, just outside the park entrance, with a thousand foot cliff hanging over the resort and the best pool view ever! And only about 3 hours drive from our house in Phuket. Like.
