Of Phuket's main beaches, Kata is reckoned to be the quietest, though I think in the last few years it's maybe become busier than Karon. Kata Beach, is where mass tourism really started in Phuket when Club Med opened back in 1985. Club Med is still there occupying a huge tract of land in front of the beach - not actually right on the beach - there is a small, fairly quiet and narrow beach road between the resort and the sand. Another slightly bigger road behind Club Med takes much of the traffic heading from one end of Kata to the other. The main through road (Patak Road) is even further from the beach - linking Kata and Karon Beaches heading from Karon Circle at the north end of Karon, passing Karon and Kata temples and finally a few km later, up to the hill to Chalong and on to Phuket Town. Patak Road does have some hotels, or has the main entrances to some larger hotels, and is where many local people actually live, with lots of small restaurants and businesses by the roadside. Here's a little list of some suggested hotels in the Kata Beach area.

Suggestions for Kata Beach HotelsSawasdee Village
Sawasdee Village has been in Phuket for a long time, opened in 1991 - a green oasis with lush gardens and water features, a very good spa and an olde Thai style feeling. There's also the luxury Baray Villa on the same site.

Mom Tri's Villa Royale
Has to be one of the best hotels in Phuket, (almost) always gets amazingly good reviews. Villa Royale was built on the site of the owners house, and overlooks Kata Noi beach - about a 15 minute walk or 2 minute taxi ride to the busier area at the south end of Kata beach. It's another olde Thai style place with individual villas on the hillside, and a top rated restaurant too.

Avista opened at the end of 2009, on the hillside overlooking Kata Bay at the north end of Kata beach. A modern style hotel with all the mod cons, and gets a lot of very good reviews. Close to the beach and and Kata Center.

CC's Hideaway Hotel
CC's Hideaway (formerly CC Blooms) is a different kind of place to stay - up in the hills, great view but not by the beach, it used to be promoted as gay-friendly (something to do with Bette Midler) and may not be for everyone due to the hillside location, quite a long way from the beach, but did I mention the views? I've been up several times to pick up diving customers, looks like a nice little hideaway to me!

Kata Palm Resort
Kata Palm Resort is more of a family oriented hotel, a standard "holiday resort" with big pool and kids pools, lots of rooms, just a few minutes walk to the beach and close to lots of restaurants at the busy south end of Kata Beach.
